Bonds Just Had Their Worst Quarter in Decades. The Experts Disagree on What Happens Next.
Same data, three forecasts, and why the most crowded trade is rarely the safest guide.
WEEKLY BLOG 10/12/26 – 10/16/26
September payrolls landed this week at 29,000 jobs. Unemployment rose to 4.2 percent. Weak hiring like that usually pulls interest rates down.
It didn’t. The ten year Treasury yield sits near 5.3 percent after rising about 0.87 percentage points in the third quarter. According to Reuters, that was the sharpest quarterly jump since 1994. Futures markets lean toward another Fed hike by year end.
Then the commentary split, and that’s the interesting part.
Three readings of the same data
One camp expects the Fed to keep tightening. Strong inflation readings, oil prices and several Fed officials open to more hikes all support that view.
A second camp argues that bond pessimism has reached an extreme. Historically, extremes like that have sometimes come close to a bottom in bond prices.
A third camp expects a scare first. Yields jump, the ten year heads toward 6 percent, and only then does anything settle.
Same jobs report. Three forecasts. All from people who do this full time.
Context on “high” rates
A 5 percent yield feels high. Next to the zero rate years after 2009, it is. Against a longer stretch of history, it looks ordinary. Investor Howard Marks has argued since 2022 that base interest rates are more likely to average 2 to 4 percent than the near zero levels of the last cycle. Anyone who started investing in the last fifteen years learned what “normal” looks like during an unusual era.
The crowded boat
A single idea runs through a lot of market commentary right now. Analysts call it positioning, which means how many investors are already leaning the same direction.
Some argue bond pessimism is extreme. Others say bets on oil look unusually light for a $100 barrel. The logic behind each is the same. When nearly everyone has already made a bet, few buyers or sellers remain to push the price further. Surprises tend to arrive from the other side.
Picture a boat with everyone standing on the left. The next wave doesn’t have to be big.
None of this predicts a direction. It explains why consensus is a poor guide and why the most obvious trade is often the most crowded.
Stocks keep climbing, and not everyone agrees why
Stocks have stayed calm and near record highs. Some analysts expect money to rotate away from a handful of large tech names toward the rest of the market. They stress this is a call about leadership, not a call for a broad decline.
Others see cracks. They point to semiconductors, small caps and transports reversing lower in a single session this week.
Both groups are looking at the same market.
One data point from the AI boom
Micron’s fiscal 2026 revenue came in at $133.19 billion, up from $37.38 billion the year before. That is roughly 3.5 times higher in a single year. Some analysts now wonder whether AI spending can keep growing at that pace into 2027. Markets often react poorly to slower growth even when the absolute numbers stay huge.

Fuel is a policy story as much as a market story
The G7 announced a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of oil over four months, with diesel front loaded. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve holds about 283 million barrels, the lowest since 1982 and roughly 40 percent of its capacity.
Energy prices feed into everything else. They show up in shipping costs, grocery bills and inflation readings, which loops straight back to what the Fed does next.
A product worth understanding
The SEC approved a rule change this month that allows six 3x leveraged products from Volatility Shares to be listed, including Bitcoin and Ether versions. They are not trading yet, and no launch date has been set. They are exchange traded products built on futures, not traditional funds.
These products reset daily, which creates something called volatility decay. Large swings in both directions chip away at returns over time. An investor can lose money in one of them even if Bitcoin ends the period flat.
That’s math, not opinion. It’s a good reminder to read how a product works before judging what it holds.
Where I could be wrong
Rates could keep climbing and the “closer to normal” view could look naive for a while. The rotation story might fade. Sentiment extremes can last far longer than anyone expects. Several of the views above come from analysts who have been wrong before, and I might be too.
The takeaway
Markets rarely hand out a clean story. This week the data pointed one way, the market moved another, and the experts split three ways. That mess is what most weeks actually look like.

About Amit: I am a first generation American, the son of a working-class Indian family, and I lived through my parents’ struggle to find their place in this country, to put down roots that would sustain them as well as their children in a new land. As they encouraged me to excel in school and fostered my hobbies and interests, I was keenly aware of the dynamic between them. I understood that there was a difference between where they came from individually and where we were now. They worked hard in their individual capacities, but they weren’t always on the same page about financial issues – and that can make or break a family’s future. I didn’t know it at the time, but this laid the groundwork for my passion towards financial services and helping families succeed.
